Great turn out: 123 registered boats, 123 in the water, 121 finished under own paddle

 * For those who competed in the Duel Categories and checked their times immediately after the race, you may wonder how you have since shaved 5 minutes off those times…Well, we had not yet calculated the 5 minute difference in the starts, at that point. (Times quoted at the trophy ceremony, however, should have been correct.)

Champions of Race Deserve Thanks

If you ventured to the banks of the Broadkill River in Milton’s Memorial Park on the evening of Saturday, August 26, it would have been impossible to tell that only a few hours before, those historic waters had been awash with some 123 boats participating in the 7th Annual Broadkill River Canoe and Kayak Race. The drama of the paddling competition was over, the cheers from hundreds of spectators had died away, all awards had been presented, and the finish line banner had been taken down to be stored for next year. But if you were lucky enough to have participated in some way in the event earlier that day, as they say, “you are lucky enough!” Actually, luck has very little to do with this annual event, which serves as the Milton Theatre’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Hard work and dedication, mixed with a huge dose of generosity and adventure has been the winning recipe for the success of the Broadkill River Race. The following is all too brief recognition of the real champions of the race.

First, Heritage Creek, an exciting new homes community coming soon to Milton, took the lead when it agreed to be the premier sponsor of this year’s event. We are tremendously grateful for their generosity, their support of the Milton Theatre, and their commitment to the Town of Milton. Ryan Homes’ Summerwalk at Cannery Village in Milton also rose to the challenge and was this year’s presenting sponsor. We cheer them both as winning representatives of the race, and fine examples of the high quality of residential development that Milton seeks.

Other generous sponsorships from Sen. Thurman Adams, Jr., Bayhealth Medical Center, Comcast, County Bank, Federal Street Financial Services, Frank Robino Companies, Happy Harry’s, Irish Eyes Pub & Restaurant and Short Funeral Services provided every registered racer with an official 2006 T-shirt, which was handed-out by our “official” T-shirt ladies, Connie Fisher and Leah Betts.  It should be noted here that Leah & Connie double as our “official” ad sales team also, and months before a single paddle even skims the water, they have pounded the proverbial pavement and solicited nearly every advertiser featured in the official race booklet.  And we thank every single one of those advertisers who agreed to their “demands.”

The race itself could not start or finish without the help of some other very cheerful and sturdy volunteers.  Ches Warrener and Chris B deserve the first round of applause for their tireless efforts to promote the race by distributing race booklets and posters throughout Sussex County, and sending race information into canoe & kayaking cyberspace. Veteran organizer, Christine Davis performed in her usual Herculean fashion throughout race day and I cannot imagine the event without her, while newcomers, Mike & Denise Boswell and John & Helgard Legg were quick studies and proved invaluable. Bill Fisher, as always, helped out wherever and whenever it was needed, as did Chuck and Patt Wagner.

Every year I pray that Quest Fitness will agree to assist us again in promoting the race, providing boat rentals, and orchestrating the shuttle service for racers---they have never let us down and didn’t this year either. Under the cool direction of Alan Jackson, Milton’s Fire & Water Safety team and other area rescue units patrolled the waters and made sure all racers were accounted for. Once again, Kevin & Nancy Burdette provided our sponsor and comfort boats, while Jack Hudson captained a crew to make sure the racers stayed a steady course. These people are all winners.

While most event organizers and volunteers spent their morning at Oyster Rocks Road, busy with registration, etc., Bill Baughman, Esther Friend, Holly Smith and Ches Warrener made sure tables were set at the finish line in Milton’s Memorial Park for sales merchandise and award trophies, which this year were sponsored by Delmarva Power, Irish Eyes Pub & Restaurant and Dr. & Mrs. James C. White. And not to be overlooked, the Milton Theatre, as the event’s beneficiary, demonstrated one of its multi-use capabilities and under the experienced management of Bob Blayney and Suzette Chambers, screened free movies all day long.

But ultimately, the Broadkill River Race depends on the participants in the race. Registration has steadily improved since the first race in 2000 when only seven boats vied in the challenge of the Broadkill. Last year we registered 97 and we were hoping for 107 at this year’s 7th annual; so we were far from disappointed when a recording-breaking 123 boats were launched--filled with the most enthusiastic paddlers ever.

Although this popular race now attracts some very accomplished competitors, it has remained an ideal opportunity for the less skilled, recreational paddler to simply enjoy a day full of fun, family and friendly competition. If it were not for these champions who are filled with a spirit of adventure, there would be no need to offer these words of sincere thanks to everyone who makes the Broadkill River Canoe & Kayak Race an annual winner.
